Sustainable fish produce in Singapore

The last time I blogged about sustainable fisheries was in Nov. I forgot to see what sustainable sources of fish Singapore has. I was a little disappointed not to see a Singapore supplier of seafood on the sustainable list, but the Marine Stewardship Council has a list of sustainable fish produce that's available in Singapore. It's not a lot and it's frozen so I can't do much steaming with it either.

Are you a CEO?

Or do you have a friend who is a CEO? Well, this book is for you!!! I've been reading "Green to Gold" by Daniel Esty and Andrew Winston and it is a really good read. It reminds me a little about the other book I blogged about, Predictably Irrational.

I'm reading the last chapter and thought that I shld blog about it now :-)

For the doubters in making an organisation environmental, this book addresses your concerns and shows you how to join the "green wave". It also tells you why some environmental initiatives fail. Lots of examples are given, like 3M, GE, BP, Body Shop, and it looks at the perspectives of the various stakeholders such as the community, financers, regulators, think tanks and NGOs.

It can be bought at Borders for $37.90 or you can borrow it at the library at Yishun.....

Energy efficiency

I wonder whether the financial crisis is having an effect on Singapore's Energy Efficiency programmes. With the lower oil prices, and a bottom line to watch, companies may veer away from energy efficiency.

Equator principles

Have you heard of the Equator Principles? Banks around the world can sign on to this agreement which creates new standards for how banks make decisions about project finance loans. Project proponents need to prove that the environmental and social impacts of the project have been well thought through and will be mitigated. Was hoping to see that there would be a Singapore bank, but it looks like that most of them are from the West and Japan. Considering the state of the economy, it would make sense to put your money into a project that has reduced its environmental risk, don't you think?

Living without a fridge

Can you live without your fridge? Apparently, Rachel Muston of Canada can. She saves 1300kWh electricity per year, the equivalent of burning 105 gallons of petrol. I think we can do it in Singapore. Just pop down to the wet market in the morning and buy your ingredients for lunch, and then pop down in the late afternoon to buy stuff for dinner. What do you think?

Wooden chopsticks - health alert in HK

This is a scarey piece of news concerning some virus that is spread in wooden chopsticks. I think I will be using plastic chopsticks and not wooden ones. Well, this is definitely another incentive to stay away from reusables...

Swirl, swirl

Swirl, swirl, swirl (as opposed to twirl, twirl, twirl) ! Anyway, some of you probably know about Swirl, the vintage-inspired shop in Singapore. They have days where you can take your old clothes (in usable condition) and swop them with other customers at the store. Why buy more when you can swop! I think is brill but I would have to take my son along and I can imagine him running amok in the store and jumping into the pile of clothes. Anyway, for those of you interested, you can pop by their blog to find out when the next swop is :-)

I found a diy tute on their blog and it is ideal for scraps of material! Something simple to add colour to a dull dress or top :-)

Whale meat

Hello from HK! I'm into my second week of my holiday and this is what I found in a magazine; whale meat for sale. You can go to the website to check it out. According to the article, it is supposed to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. It also says that they got the meat legally from a Japanese store. I thought trading in whale meat is banned under CITES.

Recycling bins in Panyu, China

During our stay at Panyu, a city in Guangdong, we saw a lot of recycling bins, but they weren't being used properly. According to the guide, the public don't really know how to use them. This is a classic case of providing the infrastructure but there being very little behavioural change. The guide did mention that they have to pay 30 Chinese cents for every plastic bag they get from the supermarket. He also said that because of this rule, a lot of the plastic bags are now extremely thin.
