Greeny Crafter 24 - Hulibug

This week is an exciting week for me. Firstly, because the lovely owners at Bamboo House agreed to host my first recycling workshop on 12 Aug, 3 - 4pm - if you would like to participate, hop over to Bamboo House's FB page and drop them a message. Secondly, I'm starting my life anew - spending more time with family and being more patient with them.

Profile Picture

This week's Greeny Crafter is Hulibug.  I came across her at the Refashion Co-op and was amazed by her creativity and sewing skills.  I wish schools could teach these skills again instead of focusing so much on IT.  I didn't learn computers until the last 2 years of high school and I think I turned out okay!

My first workshop coming up!

I'm so so so so excited! I will be holding my first recycling craft workshop on 12 Aug at 3pm, and thanks to Bamboo House for agreeing to host me. Although I've done training at work, this is a totally different level for me!  Any tips? I guess, I shouldn't be too serious, like at work :-)

In this workshop you will be transforming your old T-shirt into a basic reusable bag. Use this bag to "tar bau" or carry your lunch box to the office, wrap a gift or even as a birthday party pack. No sewing skills are required!

What you will be taking home - your very own T-shirt bag
Items to bring to the workshop - an old T-shirt (short sleeved & round necked of any size) and a pair of sharp scissors. The size of the T-shirt will determine the size of your bag.

When?
12th Aug 2012 (Sunday), 3pm

Where?
@ Bamboo House, Hougang

How much?
SGD5 only with refreshment**

My soap nut journey so far

I've been having fun with my soap nuts. The feeling I get is similar to the satisfaction I had when I folded my son's washed and dried reusable nappies - I know, you're probably thinking I'm wierd, but I think it's a mummy-thing!

Some of you emailed to ask when to stop using each batch of soapnuts when doing the laundry.  Here's my pic of soap nuts after 4 washes in the washing machine. I've put them along side the soap nuts before use so you can see the difference.  By the time, they're all shriveled up and paler, it's time to say "bye, bye", but you can always make sure by soaking them in hot water and giving it a shake to make sure.

Veggies - giving them another chance

Well, you may remember my relationship with the chilies and the tomatoes - it didn't work out and they decided to say "goodbye". Or rather I was too busy, didn't talk to them and forgot about them (apart from the daily watering).  My hubby (being pragmatic again!) said that I should give up on growing my own veggies at home.  I'm not giving up yet!  This time, I'm choosing something simpler - spring onions.

I bought a bunch of spring onions from Shop N Save for SG$1 cut off the bulbs and let them soak overnight on a very wet towel to "activate" the roots. I was careful not to submerse the whole root though - didn't want it to start rotting.  The next day, I planted them into my pot.  Wish me luck!!!

I found this video from the Botanic Gardens in Singapore.  Definitely a good reminder for us busy folks, but he makes it look sooooo easy.  Oh, the expert says that I should water the plants TWICE a day due to the hot weather in Singapore.  OK! Got it!

Make a guess!

So, we paid a visit to Ikea over the weekend and I spotted 2 recycling bins.  I popped over and took a look because I was curious whether we use them correctly.......

Another fast food outlet?

Actually, maybe the title of this post should read "McDonald's is taking over my neighbourhood!"  We have 3 McDonalds on my side of town and the third one is expanding to include an extra 80 seats.  I wish the malls can consider healthier fast food options - besides the 3 McDonalds, we have 1 KFC, 1Texas Chicken, 1 MOS Burger (Japanese version of McD), 1  Old Chang Kee (fried snacks), 1 Long John Silvers and Yoshinoya.   Apart from Yoshinoya, I just see FRIED food I don't want my family to eat!

They're slowly expanding....

80 more seats!!!

Greeny Crafter 23 - Reverse Clothing

My in-laws left yesterday morning and it felt rather awkward afterwards because it was rather too quiet in the house! Missing their company already. Maybe I have in-law withdrawal symptoms :-)

This week's Greeny Crafter is Corina from Reverse Clothing. I love her creativity and style.  Take a look!

Do you boil your water?

Well, my in-laws are in town until the end of the week - another deep breath! I think most of us bend over backwards to please them, and tolerate whatever they rattle on about :-)   At times, we're grateful that they're around to help out with the kid things, and they do give useful tips!

In most of Asia, we still boil our tap water before drinking it.  My MIL taught me a neat tip - boil your water in a kettle just before dinner, submerge the hot & full kettle in a sink full of water (be careful not to let the water in the sink flow into the kettle) and let the heat transfer into the water.  After dinner, you will have a sink full of hot water that you can use to wash your dishes and you don't have to turn on the water heater !

Greeny Crafter 22 - Secondhand Couture

Ugh, don't you just hate it when you're having problems with the internet connection. It's so unstable so I haven't been able to post my Greeny Crafter post until this evening.  I've also got my in-laws over for the whole of this week - deep breath - so if I'm slow in getting back to you, please bare with me! Anyway, something to be happy about - Apple has made a U-turn and is rejoining the American EPEAT (the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) environmental ratings system, after public disappointment. I just wonder why they decided to leave the system in the first place.

This week’s Greeny Crafter is MaryBeth of Secondhand Couture.

Uniqlo

My friend commented that whenever she pays Uniqlo a visit she is very tempted to buy everything in the store especially when they come up with cute t-shirts almost every week.  So, we were very excited to see the All-Product Recycling Initiative poster in their stores in Singapore, but rather disappointed that it has not been rolled out in Singapore yet.

It would be great to see this in Singapore and here are my thoughts:

  1. There would be enhanced awareness about recycling.  There are SEVEN Uniqlo stores in Singapore to spread the word.
  2. Maybe a small discount to encourage customers to bring back their old Uniqlo items?
  3. Tie up with Singapore's thrift stores - they would love you!!!
  4. Get a group of under-privileged women to recraft them into unique items for sale at the Uniqlo stores. Profits go to the talented ladies....

Melbourne - a liveable city

The World Cities Summit may be over, but I'm still on a whirlwind tour of the places that rank highly as liveable cities :-)  Last week, KJ took us to Toronto. I love how they have many parks and even have fenced in dog parks.  They also have farmers' markets to purchase organic and locally grown produce - I wish we had these in Singapore!

Today, we're travel to the other side of the globe to Melbourne. Erica from Recycled Fashion takes us along with us to her city and tells us what makes it a liveable city to her.

Greeny Crafters 21 - Cas Holmes

work by Cas Holmes

The weather in Singapore is becoming really strange - it was chilly and raining really heavily on Thursday and now it's scathingly hot I dare not venture outside for fear of a heat stroke! What's happening?

This week's Greeny Crafter is the talented Cas Holmes, an artist who uses re-salvaged materials from tea bags to sweet wrappers in her art work.  I find her pieces of work very inspiring and they have a calming affect on my mind. Let's take a look.....

Who is Cas Holmes?
I live in Kent in a small ex council house  in an urban environment, bordering a park. Careful use of things has always been part of my life.  I had a Romany grandmother and was taught to value and get as much use out of things as I could. I like to use discarded items, waste material no longer considered useful. Fragments and layers mark the passing of time, the rituals of making(cutting paper, gathering materials, machining, sewing) acting as part of the narrative of the work. This ethos of re-using things carries through to my life whole house is decorated with things hand made, found in skips or built by myself or my partner.

How did you start out as an artist and now as an artist who uses recycled/reused materials?  Do people appreciate the artwork more once they know it's from recycled/reused materials?

After obtaining a Fine Arts degree in the early eighties, (University of Creative Arts, Kent) my understanding of paper and related media wasfurther enhanced through two periods of long-term study in Japan inthe mid to late eighties (supported by the Japan Foundation and the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. A joint award (Arts CouncilEngland/British Council) led to further research into art basedorganisations and environmental community groups in Canada.

What other people have said
Cas Holmes makes art. If it happens to reference the techniques of the quilter, it is coincidence- same brush, different painting. Her work has a primitive quality that wanders the earthly through the ethereal. Translucent layers of painted fabrics, collaged papers or stitched bits combine and then recombine across different series ofher work. Cas sketches regularly. When we went to dinner, shesketched the restaurant interior. During a lunch break, she sketched the classroom venue and then later, on a group walk, she encouraged us all to do the same. She brings this quality to her thread painting-which is more thread sketching with frenetic stitch lines that capture movement and personality. The simplicity of her thread sketching brings a charm to her work and a sense of urgency; as if we need to look now to see a moment or thing before it is gone. This simplicity can also bring reassurance to any of us- to say that we need not worry about the perfection of every line of stitching. Inthis medium, we can cast off the yoke of perfectly spaced, even stitching and embrace the moment of 'doing.'

Cas Holmes's favourite projects

It is difficult to speak of a favourite project. I like work in unexpected places which can stretch me and have made installations for exhibitions in non-gallery spaces and workplaces. (some paid, mostly not). This has included work with suspended teabags. Commissions can be exciting, I am motivated by exchange with other artists and writers to create pieces with relevance to given situations, audiences and locations. I think my absolute fave as to be something more ethereal. The backs of some stitched cards (made to raise funds for the Pakistan floods two years ago) turned into an animation just for the share hell of it. .I love Crows.

I will be guest artist at the Festival of Quilts(August) and the Knitting and Stitching Show in London (October) this year. It is my most interesting challenge and scary!

Getting inspiration

I am interested in the open landscape, the shadows of marks made by man in the earth, the reflections in water and flooded fields, gardens and seasons changing.I have a love-hate relationship with nature. I spend time outdoors as part of necessity as I do not drive. You experience the pull of the land in a very different way when walking on a cold winters day to a sunny afternoon. It is quite different to viewing itthrough a car window. The land is very much part of all of us, nomatter how much we try to suppress it with concrete and motorways.Things return to the wild if we left well alone, and suppress our need to tame and control. I like to think my work, as an expressionof my current interest, serves as a reminder of this connection to nature.

Cas has published a book, The Found Object in Textile Art (published 2010, Batsford) which gives a broader background to ideas, techniques and inspiration. She can be found at http://www.casholmes.blogspot.co.uk/

Thank you, Cas! I would love to see your pieces of art in person, and if I had the chance, attend your workshops :-)

City of Toronto - a liveable city

Do you live in a liveable city? Apparently, cities are the places to be - if you have a well-managed city, you are likely to have a lower carbon footprint, don't need to drive a car (because of great public transport), and most amenities are within walking distance. Remember my Back to the City post?

Many cities around the world have been ranked highly by experts to be the most liveable, including Toronto, Melbourne and Singapore.   This year, the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize 2012 was awarded to the City of New York at the  World Cities Summit 2012 for being transformed into a vibrant, liveable and sustainable urban community.

Today, I'm happy to have fellow blogger, KJ, to write about her experiences in Toronto, Canada and what makes it liveable to her.  KJ has a lovely blog on crafts, so hop over to find more about her!

Greeny Crafters 20 - Pretty Shabby UK

It's been a lovely weekend and I hope it's been same to you too. We attended a good friend's wedding - had lots of pics opportunities!  Hubby's also been on the computer tracking the political situation at home - nobody likes a leader who lies, or has alleged communist ties. Ugh.

This week's Greeny Crafter is Dawn from Pretty Shabby UK!
